Development and application of automatic lidar aerosol typing algorithms for satellite validation and model assimilation/evaluation

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) is an internationally
renowned institute in the field of aerosol and cloud research. Its Ground‐based Remote
Sensing group offers a 3‐year PhD position (65% TV‐L EG 13) in the framework of
validation of the upcoming satellite lidar missions ADM‐Aeolus and EarthCARE with
ground‐based lidar systems.
TROPOS is operating several automated and continuously measuring multiwavelength‐
Raman‐polarization lidar systems (polly.tropos.de) worldwide. The lidars are embedded
in the PollyNET, EARLINET, and GALION networks. The aim of this PhD work is to develop
a sophisticated automatic aerosol typing based on existing lidar measurements, which
will be used for upcoming validation efforts of the new space‐borne lidar missions and for
data assimilation purposes. Optical as well as microphysical retrievals are planned to be
considered together with optimal estimation approaches. As a basis for the validation
efforts, the successful candidate will be also involved in the quality assurance of the Polly
lidar measurements and develop automatic tools for this issue.
Requirements/Prerequisites:
• Successful Master (M.Sc.) or equivalent in natural science (physics, meteorology, or
similar)
• Programming skills, best in Matlab and Python
• Knowledge of lidar data analysis
• Interest in atmospheric processes
Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, preference will be given to a
disabled person. TROPOS is committed to increase the fraction of female scientists and
particularly encourages qualified female researchers to apply.
