PhD Position — Identification of trends in aerosol-cloud-dynamics interactions from ground-based remote sensing

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) is a research institute of the Leibniz Association and an internationally renowned institute in the field of aerosol and cloud
research. In the framework of the Horizon Europe project CleanCloud TROPOS will join a European consortium of research institutions to prepare climate sciences for the transition of
the atmospheric environment into a new post-fossil state (without combustion of fossil fuels).
One sub-project of CleanCloud is dedicated to the statistical assessment of aerosol-cloudinteraction processes based on long-term active and passive ground-based remote-sensing
measurements (e.g., aerosol & Doppler lidar, cloud radar). The Remote Sensing Department of TROPOS holds world-leading expertise in the acquisition and exploitation of such datasets,
which nowadays exist for many sites of the European Research Infrastructure ACTRIS, to which TROPOS contributes with several permanent sites and its mobile observatories
LACROS and OCEANET-Atmosphere.

For the statistical analysis of the ground-based measurements, TROPOS invites applications for a position as PhD student (m, f, d), who will specifically work on the following tasks:
 Utilization of synergies between lidar and cloud radar observations for the determination of cloud macro- and microphysical properties
 Incorporation of cloud turbulence as novel constraint of the derived cloud parameters
 Determination of cloud-relevant aerosol properties (concentration of cloud condensation nuclei and ice nucleating particles) from lidar observations
 Participation in field experiments (e.g., to New Zealand) planned in the framework of the project

A successful implementation of the PhD project will benefit strongly from the candidates existing knowledge on the exploitation of synergies between lidar and cloud radar
observations, such as the ACTRIS Cloudnet scheme, the CAPTIVATE or DARDAR cloud property retrievals, or similar. Good programming skills, preferably in Python, Matlab or IDL,
and strong motivation for continuously improving these skills are mandatory. Desirable qualifications are practical experience or strong interest in field experiments. An open-minded
work attitude would strongly foster the collaborative perspectives provided within the European CleanCloud consortium and TROPOS itself.

The ideal starting date would be 1 January 2024, with a fixed term of 3 years.

We offer you an exciting job with a varied activity in an interdisciplinary working environment and a variety of work and family measures as well as flexible working hours and daycare
places. The employment is temporary and includes a part-time position with 26 hours / week (65% full-time equivalent). Remuneration is provided at TV-L pay group 13, including the
attractive social benefits of the German public sector. In order to increase the proportion of female employees in scientific and science-related positions, we hereby specifically invite
female candidates to apply. People with severe disabilities have priority in the hiring process if they have the same suitability, aptitude and professional qualifications.
